Booking your first lesson

Getting started on Vocally takes just a few minutes.

Find a tutor

Open the tutor catalog and narrow it down with the filters that matter to you:

• Language you want to learn
• Price per lesson
• Specialties — conversation, business, exam prep, and so on
• Country and the languages a tutor speaks

Each tutor card shows their price, lesson length and a short intro so you can compare at a glance. Open a profile to watch their intro video and read what other students said.

Book a trial or a lesson

Open a tutor’s profile and pick a time that works for you.

1. Pick the language you want to learn and the lesson length the tutor offers — they’re chosen separately, and the price is the same in every language.
2. Your first lesson with a tutor is a trial. After that, your lessons with them are regular lessons.
3. Confirm the time in your own timezone.
4. Pay, or use a lesson credit you hold with that tutor. If the tutor confirms bookings by hand, your lesson is a request until they do; if they don’t within 24 hours or before it starts, you get a lesson credit.

A trial costs the same as a regular lesson of the same length; it’s there so you and the tutor can see whether you’re a good fit.

Studying with the same tutor regularly? Once you’ve reserved a first lesson with them you can buy a package from their profile, and your lessons come out of it at a lower price per lesson. If Vocally has given you free lessons with a tutor, reserving one of those counts as your first lesson too — your next booking with them is a regular lesson, and packages open up.

Join your lesson

Lessons happen over video inside Vocally. When it’s time, open your upcoming lesson and join the call directly in your browser — no extra software to install.

Messages and contact details

Keep your conversations on Vocally. Chat messages, booking notes and reschedule notes can’t include email addresses, phone numbers, links to other sites, social media or messaging handles, the names of other messaging or video apps (such as WhatsApp or Zoom), or outside payment methods, and they can’t be used to arrange lessons or payments outside Vocally. Links to Vocally’s own pages are fine. A message that breaks these rules isn’t sent: we tell you why and your text stays in the box so you can edit it.

Leaving a review

Once you’ve completed your first paid lesson with a tutor, you can rate them and write a review from their profile. Trial lessons don’t unlock reviews: a trial is there for you and the tutor to see whether you’re a good fit, so it never becomes a rating for them. You can update your review as you keep learning together.

A review can’t include contact details such as an email address, a phone number or a link, and Vocally may take a review off a tutor’s profile when it breaks the Terms of Service.
